Everyone has heard of a king bed and even a California king bed, but what about

Everyone has heard of a king bed and even a California king bed, but what about Texas, Wyoming, Alaskan and Florida king beds? Believe it or not, not everything is bigger in Texas.

King-sized mattresses were once the pinnacle of sleeping comfort when they were introduced in the 1940s. Stretching over 6 feet in each direction, they were eventually one-upped by the introduction of the California king bed.

A California man named David Bergeson is widely credited as the creator of the California king bed in 1982, according to Slate. This mattress was created to accommodate people who needed more leg room than the 6-foot, 7-inch mattress afforded by adding an additional four inches to its length.

Companies have since begun manufacturing even bigger mattresses to accommodate a wide range, and number, of body sizes. The Florida king bed is among the largest.

A Florida king bed mattress is essentially a much wider standard king bed. It's similar in length — 80 inches rather than 78 inches — but it's 32 inches wider, making it a whopping 9 feet wide.

Mattresses around the world come in all shapes and sizes. Compared to king-sized mattresses in the U.S., the Florida king bed is the second largest mattress among standard, California, Wyoming, Texas, Alberta and Alaskan king beds.

The Alaskan king bed is the biggest, clocking in at 108 inches wide and 108 inches long. At 9 feet long, that's nearly 2 feet longer than retired basketball great Shaquille O'Neal is tall.

Florida king beds are only available at City Furniture, which has 23 stores located across Florida. The mattresses can be purchased online and start at $1,699, according to the store's website.
